Chiropractic and Extremities

chiropractor fishers Chiropractic and ExtremitiesThe old adage “the leg bone is connected to the…thigh bone”, is perhaps most underrated saying in the care for musculoskeletal injuries. Forgetting the foundation of this adage, in many doctor’s offices, will lead to misdiagnosis and poor results. Let’s take your knee for example. The first point of impact and loading on the body is the feet. Because of footwear, humans have adapted an arch, which in prehistoric days, humans were flatfooted. Because of the anatomical flaws associated with this evolution, we can develop many issues. Fallen Arch Syndrome is common place today, and is in fact the leading cause of knee injuries. You see, when the Arch of the foot drops, or overpronated, it increases pressure on the inside of the knee. Gravity is now working against you, and your joints are now prone to injury.

In my experience, where many physicians fail in their diagnosis and treatment protocol, is in these details. When a patient comes to the office complaining of knee pain, the physician will typically examine the knee and the area of pain. They will then proceed to treat the pain locally. While this may be a good short term option, the larger problem still remains, the Fallen Arch.  At this point, care needs to be taken to correct the Fallen Arch to prevent further injury, and relieve any residual pain.

As a Sports Chiropractor, I focus on these patterns that are often missed by physicians. In doing so, patients not only get out of pain, but experience long term results. If you are having pain, I would be glad to consult with you to get you back in the game.

Fishers Chiropractor Explains How To Avoid Pain While Sitting At Your Desk

If you work  a desk job, inevitably you’ve encountered a sore back from sitting for extended periods of time.  That’s because often your body is forced to sit in a position which is not natural for you.  It is important to position your spine so that your joints are naturally aligned.  This will reduce strain on your muscles, tendons, and skeletal system.

chiropractor fishers Fishers Chiropractor Explains How To Avoid Pain While Sitting At Your Desk

There are two things to consider when sitting at a computer, the chair you sit in and the position of your computer.  A good supportive chair is essential.  Most computer chairs are adjustable to accommodate the user.  Sit with your feet falt on the floor and your back against the chair for support.  If your chair does not have built in lumbar support, invest in a lumbar support pillow to place in the small of your back while sitting.  This will help prevent muscle fatigue.  Adjust your chair so your hips are parallel to your knees and your ears are directly over your shoulders.  You should generally sit about 2 feet from your computer screen.  Make sure your head is in a comfortable neutral position so you don’t have to look up or down for the monitor.  This could strain your muscles or cause you headaches.  Keep your forearms parallel to the floor while using the keyboard.

Also, get up every 20-30 minutes to stretch and walk around!  No matter how healthy you are, sitting for prolonged periods of time is not good for your posture.  Over time, desk jobs can cause chronic muscle fatigue and spinal misalignment that can deteriorate your quality of life.  When this is the case, Chiropractic Adjustments and physical therapy modalities can help realign your posture and restore strength in your muscles.  If you are suffering from pain related to “sitting” at work all day, contact us today for a free consultation.  We can help get you back on track to feeling better and improving your conditions.

Performance and Chiropractic

chiropractor fishers Performance and ChiropracticAs a Sports Chiropractor it is my job to heal injuries fast, but also to prevent injury and improve performance. How is this done?… Think of your body like a Race Car. It has an electrical system (nervous system), and mechanical system  (bones/ligaments/muscles). If either malfunctions or is improperly balanced, it is going to affect the performance of the car. In the case of the Race Car, hours of meticulous preparation is given to ensure not only proper performance, but also mechanical and electrical integrity so that the car can go the distance under stress. The driver is well aware of the setup of the car, how it feels, and its functioning.  When the driver notices an issue, he has a team of mechanics there to help make the necessary adjustments.

Your body as an athlete is exactly the same. However, are you putting in the time to ensure that your body can go the distance under stress, and preparing it for optimal performance? We can all learn a lesson from this.  That is, without proper preparation of the electrical and mechanical components of your body, it is bound to underperform or break down.  Dr. Drew Hoffman, Sports Chiropractor, is the expert in the mechanics of the body. He will help to fine tune and make adjustments to your body to ensure optimal performance and longevity in your sport. Working with elite athletes, Dr. Hoffman has perfected the art of biomechanics and performance for any athlete.  Call Dr. Drew Hoffman at Allisonville Chiropractic in Fishers, IN, to schedule your evaluation today. Headaches

Headaches are a common ailment suffered by many people. There are a wide variety of headaches from Sinus to Migraine. Most of the time, people revert to over the counter medication or expensive tests to find the cause of their headaches with no avail.

In the upper cervical spine (neck) their is a dense bundle of nerves and muscles, which when they become stressed, will cause headaches. So what is stress? 1.) Physical Stress: Misalignment in the spine is a common cause of headaches. Also, your head is the same weight as a bowling ball. If you carry your head forward of your shoulders, we call this Forward Head Posture, and will cause major stress. Think about the stress on your arm if you were to hold a bowling ball out in front of your body all day long! This is the same as sitting at a desk or driving in the car several hours a day with Forward Head Posture. 2.) Chemical Stress: There is either something inside your body that is doesn’t like (toxicity) , or it doesn’t have something that it wants (deficiency). Your body will let you know in form of symptoms such as a headache. This is common with Migraines. 3.) Emotional Stress: No explaination needed here, this is life.

Is it practical then to eliminate Physcial, Chemical, and Emotional stress completely? The simple answer is No. HOW you MANAGE these stressors is the key to alleviating headaches. As a chiropractor, I help you to identify your stressors, provide relief, and then educate you on how to prevent the headaches from coming back. In doing so, the patient can get get back to their normal life, with less stress, and pain-free.

If you or someone you love is suffering from headaches, there is help. The Chiropractors at Allisonville Chiropractic in Fishers, will identify the cause and help you get back to living your life pain-free. Call us today at (317) 836-5221 to schedule your FREE Consultation today.

Things You KNEE-d To Know

The knee is a very complex joint. But, without it, we cannot move. The knee is the most commonly injured joint in the body for athletes and can lead to big issues down the road. Most injuries to the knee can be avoided with proper precaution. Interestingly enough the cause of most severe knee injury is not the knee at all, it’s the feet. Overpronation of the feet causes stress on the knee joint, and predisposes individuals to major injury. How the feet function from left to right makes a big difference too. If you overpronate on one side more than the other, you will carry more body weight on that side, predisposing that side to injury.

Warning Signs that your knees are in DANGER:

  1. Uneven wearing of the shoes. Are the heels rubbed off, or do the bottoms look different from left to right?

  1. Do your knees angle inward or “knock knee”?

  1. Do your knees angle outward?

  1. Do your feet turn outward when you walk or stand?

  1. Do you have pain in your feet, heels or toes?

Fortunately if caught early, as chiropractors, we can prevent you knees from injury and protect them for the future. Custom orthotics can be placed in the shoes to correct overpronation, exercises can be given to strengthen the knee, and adjustments can be done to align the knee joint properly.

Disc Herniation

Disc Herniation can be frightening. There are alternative treatments for disc herniations that can be provided by a chiropractor.  Intervertebral Discs are a fibrous structure that separate the vertebrae and act as shock absorbers for the spine. These Discs are filled with a gelatinous material that can bulge, putting pressure on the nerves or spinal cord. This happens often after an accident, or something as simple as simple as lifting improperly. Symptoms of a disc herniation often include pain and spasm, numbness/tingling in the extremities. These are serious warning signs, that require immediate attention. This is a condition that should not be overlooked. We can properly diagnose a disc herniation and provide fast relief using chiropractic care and physical therapy.  If you suspect that you may have a disc herniation, I encourage you to schedule your free consultation at Allisonville Chiropractic today. Sports Injuries

With sports, come injuries. Being an athlete growing up, a year never went by that I didn’t sustain some sort of sprain/ache/break.  By the time I finished high school my knee had been beat up pretty good, my shoulders impinged, my wrists were hypermobile, bone spur in the elbow, broken ankles, fingers, and on and on…Funny thing about these injuries, is that no one ever told me how those would effect me down the road. I’m now feeling the long term impacts of not healing properly from those injuries. At the time, locker room Cortisone shots and some athletic tape did the trick, just enough to keep me playing…

My story is repeated over and over with athletes in high school. Properly maintaining your body during high school athletics is very important. This will ensure that not only do you perform the best today, but also, that you will heal properly and won’t feel the effects of old injuries down the road.

If your child athlete has had sports related injuries, or is about to begin a new sport, come see the Sports Specialist who not only gets you back in the game quickly, but understands the athletes needs. Fix the problem in half the time with cutting edge therapies.

If you are not a patient of Dr. Drew Hoffman or Allisonville Chiropractic, visit our website at www.chiropractorfishers.com to schedule you free consultation with leader in natural solutions to Sports Injuries.

Off Season Training

chiropractor fishers Off Season Training

Whether you are a body builder or a professional race car driver, off season winter workouts are the most important when it comes to sustaining momentum during your competition season and preventing injury.

Now is the time to be base building. This is your “base” fitness level, which will sustain you for the course of the season. It will boost your metabolism and keep your muscles from straining.  Cardiovascular exercise is of utmost importance during this period of time, as well as sport specific resistence training. You do not need to become Lance Armstrong in a week, so take your time. Educate yourself on your sport weekly, and be sure your equipment is in proper working funtion.

Solidify your diet, caloric intake, and supplementation. Your body needs 90 of consistency before your season begins. Changing things around during the active season will cause poor adaptibility and decreased performance. Basic supplementation should include a Multi-Vitamin, an Omega-3, Glucosamine, and Probiotic. Contact me for specific brands I recommend.  Begin the habit of drinking adaquate amounts of water. 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces of water is needed for normal physiology. For example, if you are 180 pounds, 60 ounces of water or more is needed.

Injuries are going to happen at some point. It is the nature of the beast when it comes to being an athlete. How your body responds and heals, dictates how long the injury will keep you out of the game.

Your body functions much like a car mechanically. When everything is mechanically sound, a car will easily drive 200,000 miles; but if not, can break down after just 30,000 miles. A Sports  Chiropractor will look at you entire body as a mechanical being, and help to ensure that everything is working properly. We call this Biomechanics. All muscles, joints, bones, and structures need to be working synergistically is order to ensure  proper balance efficiency. A visit to the chiropractor should be a part of every atheltes workout routine, just like you get your oil changed and rotate the tires on your car a few times a year. You will notice leaps and bounds in your performance levels.

Lastly, create your yearly plan. Write down your goals and your competition calander. This way you will know how to pace your training, and won’t peak too soon. Track your progress, with successes and limitations.

I hope that these tips will help you in your off season to meet your goals this year. Please contact me at Allisonville Chiropracitic with any quesitons, or schedule your Free Consultation at the number above.  Feel free to comment below.

Ice Or Heat?: The Great Debate

The age old question, when do I use heat and when do I use ice?…Using these therapies at home will speed up recovery from an injury and help to reduce pain when used properly.

Rule of Thumb: For the first 72 hours following an injury, or the onset of pain, use ice. This can be a frozen bag of pees or a bag of ice, and doesnt need to be fancy.

Anything after the 72 hour period of time, use heat. This can be in a heating pad, or a hot shower etc…Moist heat, like a shower, will be more beneficial because it penetrates deeper into the tissue.

Complete this therapy at home for 15-20 minutes at a time, 3 times daily. Completing it for more  than 20 minutes is unneccesary.

Tips: Both ice and heat manipulate blood flow. Heat increases circulation which boosts the supply of oxygen to the area which accelerates the removal of waste products. Ice restricts blood flow which reduces inflammation and pain. If the injury hasn’t improved or gets worse after 48 hours make an appointment to see your chiropractor

There you have it folks. Please contact Allisonville Chiropractic today at the number at the top of the page with any questions, or leave a comment below.

Understanding Shoulder Pain

chiropractor fishers Understanding Shoulder PainDo you wake up at night with shoulder pain? Do you wake up in the morning with a stiff neck and shoulder? Do you have a hard time  getting comfortable sitting at times because your neck or shoulder aches? Does the front of your shoulder hurt when you  exercise?

Shoulder pain is common place in chiropractic clinical practice. Most injuries and pain are do to poor posture or malposition, and do not require invasive treatments. There is a chance, however, that something more serious may be underlying.

There are numerous muscles, tendons, and ligaments which can be injured in the shoulder girdle, and a proper diagnosis for the pain that is occuring is of utmost importance.

Imagine for me if you will how a golf ball sits on top of a golf tee. If the ball is centered onto the tee, it will stay there and will not fall off. If the ball is mispositioned in any way or if the tee is tilted, it is unstable and won’t stay on the tee…This is how the shoulder complex works. The “ball” at the end of the upper arm attaches to a depression on the shoulder blade (golf tee). If the arm or shoulder blade is positioned properly into the depression, it is stable.  If  it is on the edge of the depression,  it is susceptible to injury and wear and tear. The supporting muscles and ligaments have to be overused or compensate for the poor positioning.

chiropractor fishers Understanding Shoulder Pain

Using a series of othopedic tests and chiropractic extemity evaluation, a chiropractor can properly diagnose the cause of your shoulder ailment,  repostion the shoulder to alleviate the pain, and restore proper  function. Chiropractic treatment is quick and comfortable. Other treatment options have proven to be unsuccessful in late research. Cortisone shots, surgery, and anti-inflammatorys are temporary solutions for pain, and not long term solutions.

Common causes of chronic shoulder pain can be poor sleep posture, old sports injuries, poor desk ergonomics, tight pectoralis muscles, muscle imbalance, rotator cuff tear, and misalignment of the cervical spine.

Exercising or living with shoulder pain is a bad idea. Eventhough pain may be temporarily relieved from time to time, chances are it will return. The longer you wait, the harder it is to treat effectively and conservatively.

Dr. Drew Hoffman is a an expert in extremity injuries, and treatment. He can properly diagnose the injury, and provide fast and effective treatment for the condition, with little or no time away from your activity or  sport of choice. Let’s face it, no body wants to have to miss work,  and no athlete wants to miss training or the big race.

Understanding Your Immune System

chiropractor fishers Understanding Your Immune System

Have you noticed that over the past few years you have been getting sick more often? Do you have low energy? I want to take a minute to discuss your body’s immune system.

I will be the person to burst your bubble, and tell you that the food industry, and pharmaceutical companies are working hard to keep you sick.

For instance, Aspartame, an artificial sugar in thousands of products is not only an addictive neurotoxin, but also leads to infertility…It is found in diet products, but largely in BABY FOOD!…It is a poision that the World Health Orgainization and the FDA have chosen to look past the available research, which recommends it be blacklisted.

Aspartame is only the tip of  the iceburg. We then have Dairy, Wheat, Sugar, Saturated fats, Hydrogenated fats, and other 1,000,000 other chemicals you body is exposed to every year from food. These are called chemical stressors, which lower your immune sytem.

Physical stressors on the body such as posture, ergonomics, exercise (or lack of), accidents, spinal alignment, also lower you body’s immune system.

Emotional stressors, such as finances, work, relationships, etc..have the same effect.

It’s time to take action to counteract these things which target your immune system and are keeping you sick.

Your body’s Nervous System is the network that allows your brain to communicate with with every other cell and organ of the body. It is well known that the Nervous System controls your Immune System. The stressors discussed prior bombard the Nervous System and cause it to malfunction. Chiropractic adjustments help your Nervous System to perform better and in turn Improve your Immunity. People who get regular chiropractic adjustments,  get sick less often and less severe for these reasons. Most people relate chiropractic care to Pain, but Immunity is a great benefit of reciveing chiropractic adjustments as well.

If you are Sick And Tired Of Being Sick And Tired, take a look at the stressors in your life that are bombarding the Nervous System and lowering your Immunity.

Dr. Drew Hoffman and Dr. Joe Kunzer of Allisonville Chiropractic help individuals like yourself in the Fishers and Indianapolis area to improve immunity natrually. We coach on nutrition, stress management, and exercise, to help you have a healthier lifestyle. Call us today for a Free Consultation.

When Your Back Goes Out!

chiropractor fishers When Your Back Goes Out!

”What should I do when my back goes out?”.

I answer this question at least 3 times a week. And I see nearly 300 cases of new low back pain every year.

According to statistics, chances are good that you will at some point in your life have a bout of severe low back pain. And when this happens, most people end up at the Emergency Room.

Thankfully, you have other options….First, don’t panic.  Stop the activity that you are doing to prevent further damage. Do not try to finish the day out, or play one more hole… Ideal rest position is to lie down on your back with your legs elevated and knees bent. Now the question, Ice or Heat? Ice  is the modality of choice for the first 72 hours of an  acute injury, after 72 hours heat is preferred. Ice for 15-20 minutes at least 3 times per day in the position previously mentioned. I bag of peas or frozen veggies works great. Drink plenty of water. The formula for water intake is simple to calculate, one half of your body weight in fluid ounces is proper hydration. Eg: weight 180lbs= 90 oz water/day.

Call a Chiropractor right away, don’t wait! We can make a proper diagonsis and begin treatment immediately to start reducing your pain levels. If needed, we  can make the proper referral to other physicians or for MRI etc…We have set aside special times, everyday, to ensure that we can see you on the same day.

Most cases of acute low back pain can be treated conservatively with chiropractic care, and further intervention is not needed. Low back pain is never any fun, and can ruin your day. But next time this happens, make your chiropractic office the first stop, and begin a proper healing process. We will have you back on your feet in no time  at all.

Dr. Drew Hoffman and Dr. Joe Kunzer of Allisonville Chiropractic are the leading experts in the management of Acute Low Back Pain in the Fishers and Indianapolis Area. Call today for a same day appointment.

Is The Pain In Your Neck, A Pain In The Neck?

chiropractor fishers Is The Pain In Your Neck, A Pain In The Neck?

Is the pain in your neck becoming a pain in the neck?

Neck pain is serious and can highly affect your quality of life. The research tells us that 8/10 individuals will have at least one episode of neck pain at some point in their lives. So, when this happens, you do have several options.

The worst thing you can do is wait to see if it goes away on its own. It may seem like something little, but it could be serious, and may lead to bigger problems down the road. In truth, the longer you wait, the longer it takes to heal properly.

Most neck pain that I encounter in practice is due to misalignment of the spinal bones, which causes inflammation and pain. Pain may be felt into the arms and fingers in the form of “pins and neddles” or even numbness in serious cases.  Advil may help take the edge off of the pain, but until the spinal bones are repositioned, the pain will always return. So how do your spinal bones become misaligned? We can trace back the minor stressors put on the spinal bones all the way to your birth. You have been accumulating some of these issues your entire life, and your body is just telling you now in the form of pain. For example, your sleep position, sports, accidents, posture, exercise, laying on the couch, desk ergonomics, holding the cell phone up to your ear etc. etc..

In most moderate cases, after proper evaluation, neck pain can be resolved completely using conservative chiropractic care in a few weeks time. Using cutting edge treatments we can realign your spinal bones, and alleviate your neck pain. Allisonville Chiropractic should be your first stop, and not your last resort for neck pain. If needed, your chiropractor can take x-rays, and even order an MRI for your neck pain. We will then dicuss with you the different treatment options, and whether or not your neck pain can be helped with chiropractic care. If not, the Doctors at Allisonville Chiropractic work closely with several world class other Doctors and Surgeons who also specialize in the field of neck pain, who can provide help.

In summary, if you have neck pain, headaches, or numbness/pain into the arms and hands, now is the time to seek help. Dr. Drew Hoffman and Dr. Joe Kunzer at Allisonville Chiropractic are the leading experts in neck pain in the greater Indianapolis/Fishers area. Call us today for your neck pain consultation and visit us at www.ChiropractorFishers.com.

Allergies and Sinus Problems

chiropractor fishers Allergies and Sinus Problems
Clogged up with sinus congetion, or sneezing the day away with allergies? These are common problems that I see more and more each year. The answer to getting rid of these complaints is simple, let me show you some tips.

Your body has its own internal environment, just like the earth has an environment. The more polluted that environment becomes, the sicker or more toxic it gets.

When this happens, we have two options. First, we could add chemicals to the environment to sustain it for a while so things don’t get worse. Or second, we can clean out the toxic waste.

In my exerience, traditional medicine will point to adding chemicals into your bodies internal invironment in the form of medicine to sustain things for a while (allegra, claritin, etc). But have you noticed that you have to continue to take those year after year? This is because you haven’t yet gotten rid of the toxic waste (poor diet, poor exercise, poor sleep, poor immune system), all you have done is put a temporary fix on the real issue. Unfortunately, just like the earth we live on, if we pollute it, eventually we have to clean it up.

To start getting rid of the toxic waste, that is damaging your body’s internal invironment, lets start local. Pick up a small device called a “Neti Pot” for about $15. You can use this twice daily with warm salt water to flush and cleanse the sinuses and sinus cavities.  The concept is called Nasal Irrigation, that will help to clean out pathways throughout your sinus cavities and nose, getting rid of irritants and debris which lead to allergies and sinus conditions.  This will make a world of difference for you.  You can pick one of these “Neti Pots” up at almost any drugstore or whole food store.

This step is only the begining to making your body into a healthy environment. Dr. Drew Hoffman at Allisonville Chiropractic in Fishers and Indianpolis Indiana, would love to speak more about this with you if you have questions or want to find out more information about Chiropractic Wellness.  To schedule a FREE consultation today, visit www.chiropractorfishers.com

The Truth About Splenda

chiropractor fishers The Truth About Splenda                     Did you know?….Splenda has now taken over aspartame (Sweet and Low) as the most used artificial sugar. Splenda is found in over 7000 products from diet soda to salad dressing. 7 of 10 women will consume Splenda on a daily basis, most without their knowledge. Of those 7 women, 70% will have sensitivity to it in the form of symtoms that mimic thyroid and perimenapausal problems: Fatigue, headaches, joint pain, bloating, chills, etc.

Are  you sold on the idea that these sweetners are helping your waistline. On the contrary, latest research shows that people who consume “diet” products (with artificial sugars), actually consume more calories, than those who do not, because in their minds, they are not consuming calories from  “diet” products.

ARTIFICIAL OR “DIET” PRODUCTS ARE NOT REALLY CALORIE FREE, IT IS A MARKETTING SCHEME! One molecule of Glucose or (carbohydrate)= 4 calories.  Follow me for a minute. Splenda or Aspartame have a chemical name, Sucralose. Sucralose is a combination of Sucrose + Glucose.  Sucrose itself is AKA “Table Sugar”, and Glucose is the pure form of sugar. Sucrose is a combination of Fructose +Glucose. Fructose is found in Honey and some fruits. So at the end of all this, you are consuming GLUCOSE AND FRUCTOSE, EACH HAVING 4 CALORIES PER MOLECULE. So, you are really consuming just as many calories as your ”regular” product. Sneaky huh?

And if you have noticed, as these artificial sweetners become more popular, the more you hear about thyroid and perimenipausal symptoms. So before you head to your  primary doctor for and evaluation, evaluate your diet to see if Splenda/Aspartame may be causing these problems. SO, why does it do this? As the name suggests, Splenda is artificially created in a laboratory, so the body has an extremely hard time breaking it down. During the breakdown process, molecules called Chlorocarbons are formed in the cells…Overconsumption can lead to calcification of the kidneys and destruction of liver cells, due to the chlorocarbon compounds found in Splenda.

SOLUTION: A new product has emerged in the market today. “Stevia”, is a plant extract from the stevia leaf , and is 100% nautral. It does not have the same harmful effects that the other products do. It does have a slightly different taste  in comparison. Most super markerts now carry “Stevia”  in the health food section, or by the other sweetners.  Stay away from imitation “Truvia”.  You can pick it up in packets, or as a liquid drop. Enjoy this to your hearts desire.

In conclusion, Chiropractic is a lifestyle not an intervention. Most American’s have no idea how to eat or how to be healthy. Let me teach you the science and art of chiropractic. Call today to schedule a consultation.

Usually, when I ask the question, “Are you healthy, How do you Know?”, I get the answer “Yes, I FEEL GOOD most of the time.” This mentality folks is a major health issue to day. The notion that FEELING GOOD=Health. Let me ask you this. Most people wait until they feel symptoms or have a crisis to seek help, begin dieting/exercising, right?…When in all reality, this problem has been accumulating little by little over  a long period of time, eg: cancer, heart attack, pain.

NEWS FLASH: This didn’t just happen through bad genes or bad luck. The traditional response is to make an appointment with your medical doctor, who writes you a perscription to help the symptoms, and you don’t see them again unil the next crisis. Sound Familiar?

How Does the idea of NOT GETTING SICK, NOT HAVING PAIN, NOT HAVING CRISIS, and instead PREVENTION sound?

The “Alternative” to modern medicine, meaning Wellness Healthcare, in today’s society, is no longer the alternative, but the solution. Doctors of Chiropratic have been teaching and treating with this wellness model for a hundred years.
